12 Day Cayambe Glacier School plus Cotopaxi Summit

Our ever-popular classic climbing tour comes with an added advantage this season: the acclimatization period has been optimized by including ascents of Pasochoa, Rumiñahui and North Iliniza, which dramatically improve climbers' success rates on those mountains which tend to pose the main challenge, the Cotopaxi Volcano. Furthermore, by maintaining our famously exacting standards in quality accommodation right the way through this carefully thought-out itinerary, we've managed to put together a superlative expedition in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Day 1 Quito City Tour 2850m: On the first day of this journey we will travel to the monument of the Middle of the World, at the Equatorial monument you can take a picture of yourself in both hemispheres at the same time. After this visit we will head to the Colonial part of the city of Quito. Here we will start our city tour in the church of “La Basilica del Voto Nacional” and walk around the marvelous cobblestone streets of one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America, the tour will end at Panecillo hill. After the city tour we will drive south to PapaGayo lodge where we will spend the night.
Day 2 Pasochoa 4199m: After breakfast we will drive to the base of Pasochoa Volcano. Here we will start our first acclimatization ascend trough beautiful landscapes. During the climb a box lunch will be served to you.
Day 3 Rumi?ahui Volcano 4722m: After breakfast we will drive to the base of the Rumi?ahui volcano. The ascent to this eroted volcano is an easy challenge in preparation for the next adventure and a perfect place to train and develop your climbing skills. During the trip we will have a packed lunch. After reaching the summit we will drive back to PapaGayo lodge where we will spend the night.
Day 4 Corazon Volcano 4788m: Breakfast at PapaGayo lodge and drive to the base of Corazon volcano from which we will star or climbing. As we ascend to the summit of this inactive volcano we will be able to see the shape of a hart that gives this mountain its name. Packed lunch will be served during the climb. After descending from the summit of this hill we will return to the lodge.
Day 5 Quilotoa Lake 3914m: The Quilotoa lagoon is located within the crater of the volcano of the same name. On the way to Quilotoa we will visit a native family. After taking a moment to admire the landscape from the rim of the volcano we will start our descent to the lagoon. At the shore of this enigmatic lagoon you will be able to take amazing pictures of the stone walls that surround the crater. After lunch we will head back to our lodge.
Day 6 North Ilinizas 5126m: After breakfast we will departure to Ilinizas base. On our arrival we will start a small hike to La virgin refuge located at 3900m here we will have a packed lunch and we will continue to the north summit of Ilinizas. After the descent we will head to the city of Cayambe where we will spend the night in preparation for the next days.
Day 7 Cayambe Volcano Glacier course 4690m: After breakfast we will depart to the base of the Cayambe volcano from where we will start a hike to the first refuge at 4690m. At the refuge we will have lunch and receive the first glacier climbing instructions such as security advises and first aid instructions. We will have dinner and spend the night at the refuge.
Day 8 Cayambe Volcano Glacier course 4690m: After breakfast we will do an equipment check in order to train the different techniques required to climb the glacier. Exercises will consist in use of ice axe, crampon techniques, self-arrest, roped team travel, wall climbing route finding, navigation, dinner and sleep.
Day 9 Cayambe climbing 5790m: We begin our climbing in the early morning in order to reach the summit at sunrise. After reaching the summit we start descending in order to reach the refuge where we will have breakfast. After lunch we will drive to PapaGayo lodge in order to relax and recover for the next activities.
Day 10 Day Off: We will take this day to let our body rest and to tour the surrounding areas of the lodge.
Day 11 Cotopaxi Jose Ribas Refuge 4800m: After having breakfast and checking the equipment we will depart to the Cotopaxi National Park, here we will have a short hike to the Jos? Ribas refuge. At the refuge we will have lunch and review the different climbing techniques for the next day. We will have dinner and sleep at the refuge.
Day 12 Cotopaxi summit 5897m: After gearing up and having a small snack in the early morning we will begin the ascent. After reaching the summit we will take some time to admire the marvelous landscape and the beautiful mountains that surround the Cotopaxi. Afterwards we will descend and have lunch.
